We are not told to “debate the Holy Spirit” but to “be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). Oh the wonder of what the life, death and resurrection of Jesus means to every true believer. No longer is it “God with you” as it was in the First Testament, but “Christ in you” in the New Testament. God’s greatest gift to those who love Him is to send the Holy Spirit to seal, satisfy, steady, soothe and strengthen us.
So avoid the endless Christian debates that polarize in two extremes – fanaticism and ‘icebergism’. Instead, come like a child to your Father and ask Him to fill you with the Holy Spirit any way He chooses and to use you to radiate Jesus to others. Once you ask Him to fill you with His Spirit, go on your way believing it is done whether or not you sense emotional “bells and whistles” or suddenly find yourself exercising a new gift of the Spirit. As you simply trust God to do what He promised – give you His Holy Spirit – He will witness to your own spirit in new power to witness, new fruit of the Spirit for changes in your character, and new gifts, as they are needed.
I like what evangelist David Reagan has said concerning the Holy Spirit.
- There is a baptism of the Spirit that comes to all believers who repent and believe the gospel (Acts 2:38);
- baptism in the Spirit where He is not only residing but presiding in control (Ephesians 5:18);
- baptism by the Spirit (study Acts chapter 2) with special anointing for God’s service;
- the sign of a Spirit-filled life which is evidenced by that which cannot be counterfeited – the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22,23). So right now ask the Father to allow you to possess His precious Holy Spirit – and for the Holy Spirit to possess you!
