IT JUST HAD TO BE LOVE!

“And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord! The Lord! A God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness and truth, keeping mercy and loving-kindness for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin…” Exodus 34:6,7

How often I have felt like Moses at Mt. Sinai, crying out to the eternal “YHVH” to “show me Your glory” and wanting to see Him pass by. I’m convinced that most of us long for that “cleft of the rock” experience—especially in times of great trials.

With me, most of those times I end up focused on Jesus hanging on the Cross and my heart overwhelmed by such love. Instead of standing on a rock to behold His glory, I find myself facing the Rock of Ages with a renewed gratitude that His message to Moses takes me—and you—in.

For instead of terrifying Moses with a description of His power and justice, God our Father describes His heart as “merciful and gracious” with abundant loving-kindness. And He proves it for time and eternity when the Son of God takes our sin and death and suffers as if He is us so that we can be forgiven and be like Him. Like the following poor lines say—it just had to be love!

IT JUST HAD TO BE LOVE

Why did He die for me? Why did He die for me?

It had to be love, That’s found only above;

For Jesus to die for me.

I can’t understand; The whole thing’s too grand:

The Creator came down from above.

To woo and to win; This creature of sin:

Quite simply, It just had to be love.

The King on a cross; what a terrible cost:

With a heart that was bursting with love.

Forsaken, accursed; What more could be worse?

Can’t you see, It just had to be love.

Why did He die for me? Why did He die for me?

It had to be love, That’s found only above;

For Jesus to die for me.
