“THE MESSIAH”   (FORTY PROPHECIES FULFILLED—THE MESSIAH TEN YET TO BE FULFILLED)

By Frank Eiklor and Cecilia Contreras

LESSON 16 (Part 2)

A LOOK BACK

In our last study, we looked at 25 of 40 prophecies that Jesus Christ fulfilled in His first coming as God’s sacrifice for man’s sin. We will now view 15 more prophecies in this category. Then we will look at 10 incredible prophecies that will be fulfilled when Christ comes again—not to die but to reign. Only God can perfectly predict future events with no error. This should fill us with great confidence in His Word and great power as we share His love with those who are searching for meaning to life.

TEN PROPHECIES AWAITING FULFILLMENT

Many people—both Jewish and Gentile—point out the prophecies concerning peace on earth and say that Jesus could not be the Messiah because the world has seen everything but peace. But prophecy, seen from afar, is like twin peaks that look like a single mountain. Viewed up close, the two peaks—with a long valley in between—stand out. So it is in the first coming of the Lord of glory…and His promise to return. The following fabulous prophecies await His fulfillment.

41. MESSIAH WILL ENTER AS KING THROUGH THE EASTERN GATE—AND RULE OVER THE EARTH

 Zechariah 14:3,4,9

“Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south…And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.”

Ezekiel 44:1-3

“Then he brought me back the way of the gate of the outward sanctuary which looketh toward the east: and it was shut. Then said the Lord unto me; This gate shall be shut, it shall not be opened, and no man shall enter in by it; because the Lord, the God of Israel, hath entered in by it, therefore it shall be shut. It is for the prince; the prince, he shall sit in it to eat bread before the Lord; he shall enter by the way of the porch of that gate, and shall go out by the way of the same.”

42. MESSIAH WILL BRING IN HIS REIGN OF EVERLASTING PEACE

Isaiah 9:7

“Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.”

Micah 4:3

“And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”

43.   MESSIAH WILL END ALL WAR, KILLING AND DESTRUCTION

Isaiah 2:4

“And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”

Isaiah 11:9

“They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.”

44. MESSIAH WILL DESTROY EVIL ON THE EARTH

Isaiah 11:4

“But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.”

45. MESSIAH’S RETURN WILL CHANGE EVEN THE NATURE OF THE BEAST

Isaiah 11:6-8

“The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf  and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den.”

46. MESSIAH’S RETURN WILL CAUSE GOD’S GLORY TO COVER THE EARTH

Isaiah 11:9

“They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.”

Habakkuk 2:14

“For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.”

47. MESSIAH’S REIGN WILL EXCHANGE ARMAMENTS FOR AGRICULTURE

Micah 4:3

“And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”

48. MESSIAH WILL RULE OVER GOD’S KINGDOM ON EARTH AND ISRAEL WILL SERVE

AS HIS LIGHT TO THE NATIONS

Isaiah 2:1-5

“The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation  shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord.” (see also Zechariah chapters 12-14)

49. MESSIAH WILL LITERALLY REIGN ON THE THRONE OF DAVID

Isaiah 9:6,7

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.”

50. MESSIAH’S RULE WILL EXTEND FROM GOD’S WORLD-WIDE CAPITAL—JERUSALEM—TO ALL THE NATIONS

Zechariah 14:16-19

“And is shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles. And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain. And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, they shall have no rain; there shall be the plague, where with the Lord will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.”

CONCLUSION

There are over 300 messianic prophecies in the Old Testament. We have only studied fifty. We can now look back at many prophecies fulfilled in Christ’s first coming. But a future day will dawn when we will look back at His second coming and sing with the choirs of heaven to Jesus our King, “How great Thou art!”
